My dear, of all the letters that arrive at my writing desk in Bath, the greater part ask one question in a hundred different hands: “How does he really feel about me?” He is attentive, then distant. He says little, but appears reliably. He speaks warmly, yet never quite arrives. And the woman waiting, often a woman of sense and substance, who would counsel any friend wisely, sits turning over his last message like a tea leaf.
Let me offer you what the heavens offer: not mind-reading, but translation. Men are not silent, as a rule; they are speaking dialects of affection we were never taught. Astrology’s great gift to the loving heart is a map of those dialects. A Cancer man and an Aquarius man may love with equal depth and show it so differently that one seems smothering and the other indifferent. Below, then, is my guide to how each zodiac sign shows love, written chiefly about men, since it is men my readers most often ask after, though the essentials hold for every heart under each sign.
One caution before we begin, because I am always honest with you: a sun sign is the broad weather of a soul, not the whole climate. For the full truth of a particular man, his moon, his Venus, his timing and yours, nothing replaces a proper reading of his chart. But the sun sign is a very good beginning, and often explains years of confusion in a single page.
The Fire Signs: Love as Pursuit and Warmth
Aries (March 21, April 19)
Aries loves in the active voice. When an Aries man cares, you will know, he pursues, plans, declares, and arrives early. His dialect is initiative: the sign of his heart is that he moves toward you without being summoned. Mind the distinction, though, between the thrill of the chase and the deeper devotion; an Aries settling into constancy shows it by continuing to pursue you after he has won you. If an Aries has gone quiet, my dear, it is rarely shyness. Ask plainly; he respects nothing more.
Leo (July 23, August 22)
Leo loves in the grand style, generosity, warmth, open pride in his beloved. A Leo man in love wants to be seen loving you; he brings you into the light beside him. His quiet signal is subtler: he shows you his wounded vanity, his doubts, things the lion shows no one. If he shares his fears with you, you have his heart. What starves a Leo is feeling unappreciated; genuine praise is not flattery to him but oxygen.
Sagittarius (November 22, December 21)
Sagittarius shows love through inclusion in the adventure: he wants you beside him on the journey, laughing at the same absurdities. He is honest to a fault and allergic to cages, so his devotion can look casual. The true sign: he keeps returning, keeps planning the next horizon with you in it. When a Sagittarius speaks of “next year” and you are in the sentence, that is his proposal, sometimes years before the actual one.
The Earth Signs: Love as Deeds and Steadfastness
Taurus (April 20, May 20)
Taurus loves in the language of things done and comfort given, the shelf mended, the favourite wine remembered, the steady presence on difficult days. He is slow, and I beg you not to mistake his pace for reluctance: Taurus builds love as one builds a stone wall, unhurried and meant for centuries. He rarely gushes. Watch his hands, not his lips, if he is quietly making your life easier and softer, you are loved profoundly.
Virgo (August 23, September 22)
The most misread lover in the zodiac, and the subject of many a tearful letter. Virgo’s dialect is acts of careful service: your car serviced before the journey, your worry researched and solved, the small detail of your comfort remembered forever. He may fuss and even criticise, understand that Virgo tends what he loves, as a gardener prunes what he prizes. He will rarely say the grand thing. He will do one hundred small things instead. Count them, my dear, and you will find you are rich.
Capricorn (December 22, January 19)
If you love a Capricorn, you may have wept over his silences, so hear me: Capricorn shows love through provision, loyalty and long-term intent. He is building something, always, and when he begins quietly building it around you, including you in plans, in duty, in the architecture of his future, that is his declaration. He is often awkward with feelings and eloquent with commitment. A Capricorn who stays is a Capricorn who loves. It is nearly as simple, and as maddening, as that.
The Air Signs: Love as Words and Understanding
Gemini (May 21, June 20)
Gemini loves through conversation: when you become the person he must tell everything to, the joke, the article, the thought at midnight, you are his beloved. His attention flickers everywhere; the sign of your place in his heart is that it always returns to you. Inconsistency in small matters is his nature; watch instead whether the talking holds steady. A silent Gemini is a genuinely absent one.
Libra (September 23, October 22)
Libra was made for partnership and shows love by harmonising, the thoughtful gesture, the smoothed conflict, the beautiful evening arranged. His difficulty is decision; he can hover charmingly at thresholds for a long while. When a Libra man makes an actual choice, names the relationship, closes other doors, treasure it, for choosing is the hardest thing he does, and he only does it for love.
Aquarius (January 20, February 18)
Aquarius loves first as friendship deepening, so gradually that many a woman has stood inside his devotion wondering when it would begin. He shows love by making you his exception: the one whose company he never rations, whose oddities delight him, with whom his splendid detachment quietly fails. He may speak of feelings rarely and abstractly. But if the most independent man you know keeps choosing your company, my dear, that is the love letter.
The Water Signs: Love as Depth and Devotion
Cancer (June 21, July 22)
Cancer loves by nurture and inclusion: he feeds you, shelters you, remembers everything, and, the great signal, brings you inside, to his home, his family, his memories. His shell governs everything; hurt, he withdraws rather than argues, and a retreating Cancer is usually a wounded one, not a cooling one. Gentleness retrieves him where demands never will.
Scorpio (October 23, November 21)
Scorpio loves in the deep water: wholly, privately, and with a loyalty that borders on the ferocious. He tests before he trusts, expect long, watchful patience, and shows love through depth of attention: he remembers what you said in passing months ago; he sees through your brave faces. When a Scorpio gives you his trust, his secrets, his vulnerabilities, you have received his most sacred possession. Guard it, for it is given exactly once.
Pisces (February 19, March 20)
Pisces loves as the poets do, tenderly, intuitively, sacrificially. He shows it by feeling with you: your sadness becomes his; your joy lights him for days. He will dream aloud with you and for you. His weather is changeable and he can drift into his own tides; the sign of true devotion is that he keeps swimming back, and that his dreams, when he tells them, have you in them.
When His Sign and His Behaviour Don’t Match
If the portrait above does not resemble your gentleman, one of three things is usually true. His moon or Venus sign, the placements governing emotional and romantic style, may differ greatly from his sun; a Capricorn with a Pisces moon loves very differently from a Capricorn with an Aries one. The season’s transits may be pressing on him, a man in his Saturn return or a hard retrograde is not at his representative best. Or, and I say this with great gentleness, my dear, holding your hand as I do, his behaviour may in fact be speaking clearly, and the difficulty is only that its message is not the one your heart hoped for. Astrology translates true feeling; it does not manufacture it. A reading can tell you which of these three you are facing, and that knowledge, whatever it is, is the beginning of peace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which zodiac signs are most loyal in love? Tradition and my long observation crown the fixed signs, Taurus and Scorpio above all, with Leo and Cancer close behind. But loyalty appears in every sign when the whole chart supports it; I have known constant Geminis and wandering Capricorns.
Can astrology really tell me how he feels? It can tell you how he loves, his dialect, pace and fears, which resolves most confusion at a stroke. For how he feels about you in particular, one reads the two charts together: his placements, yours, and the timing between them. That is precisely the work of a personal love reading.
What if our signs are “incompatible”? Then you have my permission to worry considerably less than the magazines suggest. Sun-sign incompatibility is the crudest of measures; some of the most devoted marriages I have known were “impossible” pairings whose fuller charts fit like lock and key.
