My dear, of all the sky’s appointments, the new moon is the one most often missed, for the simple reason that there is nothing to see. The full moon announces herself over the rooftops in silver; the new moon keeps to the dark, invisible, seemingly absent. And yet every gardener among my readers will understand at once when I say: the new moon is the planting hour. Nothing shows above the soil, and everything important is beginning beneath it.

If there is something you long for, a love that stays, work that means something, peace in a family, courage for a new chapter, the new moon is the traditional hour for asking. Not wishing, mind you: asking, formally and on paper, in the old way. Let me show you the little ceremony I have kept for years at my writing desk in Bath, and which I commend to you with all my heart.

What Does the New Moon Mean Spiritually?

The new moon is the moment each month when the moon stands between earth and sun and her lit face turns wholly away from us. The sky’s queen withdraws; the month’s ledger closes; and for a night or two there is a hush in the heavens, the pause between out-breath and in-breath.

In the astrological tradition this darkness is not emptiness but potential. The new moon begins the lunar cycle, and whatever is sincerely begun in her hour is said to grow with the moon herself, gathering light and substance as she waxes toward full. Hence the old rule, which I have found no reason to doubt: release at the full moon, begin at the new. She is the sky’s fresh page, offered monthly, without reproach for what you did or did not manage last month. There are few things in this life so patient with us, my dear.

When to Do Your New Moon Ritual

Consult any almanac (or my letters, where I always give the dates) for the new moon of the month. The ritual is best kept on the night of the new moon or within the two days following, while the first sliver of crescent is forming, tradition holds that intentions set as the moon begins to grow are carried upward with her. Avoid the day just before the new moon, the “dark moon”, which suits rest and reflection better than requests.

Evening is the natural hour. And no, you will not see the moon, that is rather the point. You are writing to her in the dark, which is, if you think of it, an act of pure faith, and faith is the active ingredient in everything that follows.

What You Will Need

A candle, I favour white or pale blue, though any honest candle serves. Good paper and a pen that pleases you. An envelope. A cup of something warm. And a quiet quarter of an hour behind a closed door. If you wish to dress the table, choose new-moon things: a small dish of seeds, a sprig of white flowers in bud rather than bloom, a moonstone. Trimmings, as ever, are optional; sincerity is not.

My New Moon Ritual, Step by Step

Step 1: Clear the ground

Every planting begins with clearing. Tidy your corner, light the candle, breathe slowly three times. Then, this is a step particular to my own practice, and I set great store by it, spend one minute naming, silently, what you are not bringing into the new cycle: last month’s disappointment, the old refrain of “it never works out for me”. You need not fight these thoughts. Simply leave them at the door like muddy boots. One does not plant in unweeded ground.

Step 2: Write the intention letter

At the top of your paper, write the date and the words: “By this new moon, I intend…” Then write your intentions, and here, dear one, allow me to teach you the grammar the moon prefers. Write in the present tense, as though the thing were already growing: “I am becoming a woman at peace with her past”, not “I don’t want to feel sad anymore.” Write for yourself, not upon others: “I am ready to receive a faithful and devoted love”, not a named gentleman delivered to your door, the heavens do not traffic in coercion, and such requests are returned unopened. And write few things, deeply. Two or three intentions, truly meant, will always outgrow a dozen scattered wishes. A garden bed, not a broadcast of seed on stone.

Step 3: Read them aloud to the dark

Read your letter aloud, once, slowly. Spoken words have weight; the dark is listening in the friendliest possible way. Some of my readers add a simple word to their angels here, “I ask my guardian to tend these seeds with me”, and I think it a lovely courtesy. Intentions, like children, do better with more than one loving eye on them.

Step 4: Seal the letter

Now, unlike the full moon’s letter, which we burn, the new moon’s letter is kept. Fold it, seal it in its envelope, and if you have wax and a seal, so much the better; there is a small magic in old-fashioned ceremony. Write the date of the next full moon, or the next new moon, on the front. Put it somewhere dignified: a drawer of the writing desk, the jewellery box, beneath the moonstone.

Step 5: Close, and then, this is essential, act

Thank the moon and sit a moment with your tea. But hear me on this, because I am always honest with my readers: the new moon is a planting, and plantings must be watered. Within three days, take one small earthly step toward each intention, the enquiry made, the class booked, the difficult letter begun, the evening walk taken. The heavens move for the woman who moves. Intention without action is only elegant wishing, and you, my dear, are capable of far more than wishing.

Step 6: Review at the full moon

When the full moon arrives a fortnight later, open your envelope and read what you planted. You will be surprised, I promise you will be surprised, how often the garden has begun to answer. What has sprouted, tend. What has not, replant next new moon, or release by candle flame. This monthly rhythm of planting and harvest is, quite simply, the oldest self-renewal practice in the world.

New Moon Intentions: Examples to Borrow

If the blank page daunts you, borrow freely from these, adjusting to fit your own heart. I am open to a love that is constant, kind and unafraid of devotion. I am building work that honours my gifts and pays them fairly. I am becoming a calm and steady presence in my family, whatever weather they bring. I am learning to hear my intuition and act on it without apology. I am making my home a place of peace, order and soft light. I am ready for the next chapter of my life, and I trust its timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a new moon and full moon ritual? They are the two halves of one breath. The new moon is for beginnings, planting intentions in the dark. The full moon is for culminations, harvesting and releasing by her light. Kept together, monthly, they form a complete practice.

How many intentions should I set at a new moon? Two or three, deeply meant. The moon reads sincerity, not length.

Can new moon rituals help with love? They are the classic hour for it, provided you intend for yourself (readiness, openness, worthiness of devotion) rather than upon another. In my experience the heart that plants “I am ready to be loved well” is answered far more reliably than the one demanding a particular gentleman by name.

What if my intentions don’t come true? Then, as any gardener will tell you, we look with honest eyes: was it the seed, the season, or the watering? Some intentions need replanting several moons running; some are answered in a form we only recognise later. The moon is a monthly correspondent, dear one. The conversation is never over.
